The school year is still in its infancy and we have already had quite a few themes to digest... What are we supposed to do with all this? It is my hope that the following will concisely put it all into perspective and perhaps practice.
As you know, we discussed what it meant to be a professional family and though we don't choose who we work with or their personalities, we can control how we approach them. We can make a conscious decision on how we treat each other as we knock off one another's rough edges. We also talked about being "ALL IN" to this school and our community; how we have a choice in how we approach our profession and where that profession takes place ( Dade Middle school, Trenton, Ga). We can choose daily to focus on the "why" of our profession and we can strive daily to inspire and motivate ourselves. You see it is my belief that negativity comes naturally, we don't really have to try to be negative, it just happens. You do however have to choose to be positive, and you have to remind yourself and one another why you do what you do. It is my opinion that if you don't fight daily to find the positive, you will become a critical cynic who has lost their happiness and is without joy.
As we grow forward :) from these topics I would like to remind you that our parents and students have a choice too. The parents of your students have chosen DMS. And their decision to choose how they will work with you and support you will likely depend on how you communicate and treat them. You see encouragement is contagious but it has to be sought after, it has to be pursued and repeated day in and day out if it is going to be reciprocated.
I know the frosty that you received from Mr. Johnson on Friday was a minimal treat, but it was our way of encouraging you... Of being positive. It is our hope that you will pass that encouragement forward to your students and their parents. Compete with one another and get creative in the ways you will serve and encourage your students and their parents.
We look forward to a great year,
Jamison
