When you are up to bat swing through the ball.” “When you’re running on the track run past the finish line.” “Even though the hay is in the barn, we still have to plant for next year's harvest.”
These are some of the sayings I remember from my childhood. As a coach, I often talked with my players about the importance of follow-through including watching the ball hit the bat and swinging through the ball. As you do this, you create greater momentum for the ball and ultimately greater distance for the ball to travel.
Follow-through is important in life. People who say they are going to do something and then do what they said create a sense of trust with their colleagues and friends. Successful groups and organizations are made up of dependable people who follow-through. At Dade Middle School we are building a successful organization and we need our students, teachers, and parents to demonstrate their capacity to follow through. Yes, GA Milestone testing is over, and our students and teachers have done a great job administering and taking the test, but the work is not complete. 1. If we want to harvest a school with limited behavior problems and bullying...
- We have to plant seeds of student voice where students have a say in what happens.
- We have to plant seeds of bell to bell instruction even when we are past the GA milestone testing. That includes assigning homework that is completed with parent support.
- We have to plant seeds of intentional teacher professional development where teachers welcome critique because they want to become better.
- We have to plant a partnership between parents and teachers with shared responsibility for our children and students. (This means parents support teachers’ decisions and teachers communicate consistently with parents in an encouraging manner.)
